Seeking ways to educate our community about the many ways snake plants and others can provide a sense of ikigai while improving the air we breathe indoors. Ikigai Plants is a business that is dedicated to make a difference in bedrooms and offices where we spend the majority of our time.
As an educator for over 25 years. I am a thriving life long learner committed to the principals of ikigai. As a Peace Corps Response Volunteer, I have had the opportunity to live with two amazing families, each of whom had a succulent garden that they daily maintained, but neither had plants in their home. Over thirty years ago, in 1989, NASA published a study that documented and identified which houseplants could purify the air and provide oxygen at night. As I traveled the streets of Peru, I found that the snake plant lined the streets but yet no plants were in the homes I visited. I have discovered a new purpose in life to educate our community about the benefits of these amazing plants whose reason for being is to simply provide oxygen and purify the air we breathe.
I spent last year as a Peace Corps Response Volunteer serving Saint Lucia in the Eastern Caribbean in the West Indies. I transferred to Lima, Peru, for six weeks. It was during my stay in Peru that I rediscovered a plant which i have known as a snake plant. In Saint Lucia, it is known as the mother-in-law's tongue. The snake plant is native to tropical West Africa. I have since learned that it is a plant that has several scientific names, first being Dracaena trifasciata, and second, Sansevieria laurentii, both are said to be of the Asparagaceae family.
In Saint Lucia the Snake Plant is called Mother-in-Law's tongue
Lima, Peru they call the Snake Plant Mother-in-Law's tongue too.
